How to Use

Step-by-step instructions
  1. 1Enter the sensor width (mm).
  2. 2Enter the focal length (mm).
  3. 3Enter the flight altitude (meters).
  4. 4Enter the image width (pixels).
  5. 5The calculator will show the GSD in cm/pixel.

Ground Sample Distance

Calculates the real-world size of one pixel in the image.
GSD = (Sw × H × 100) / (F × Iw)

Variables:

SwSensor Width (mm)
HFlight Altitude (m)
FFocal Length (mm)
IwImage Width (pixels)

Example

Drone Mapping

Inputs:

Sensor:13.2 mm
Focal:8.8 mm
Alt:100 m
Width:4000 px

Steps:

  1. 1.GSD = (13.2 * 100 * 100) / (8.8 * 4000)
  2. 2.GSD = 132000 / 35200 = 3.75 cm/px
Result:
3.75 cm/px

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good GSD?

Lower is better for detail. 1-3 cm/px is high resolution, 5-10 cm/px is medium. It depends on your project requirements.
