FICO scores range 300-850. Payment history and utilization are most important. Lower utilization (<30%) and longer credit history improve scores.
Score = (Payment History × 35%) + (Utilization × 30%) + (Credit Age × 15%) + (Credit Mix × 10%) + (New Credit × 10%)

Variables:

Payment HistoryOn-time payments (35% weight)

Frequently Asked Questions

What's a good credit score?

800-850: Exceptional. 740-799: Very good. 670-739: Good. 580-669: Fair. <580: Poor. Most lenders prefer 670+. 740+ gets best rates. Score >800 offers minimal additional benefit.

How do I improve my credit score fast?

Pay down credit cards (reduce utilization <30%, ideally <10%). Pay all bills on time. Don't close old accounts. Dispute errors. Become authorized user on old account. Increases take 30-90 days.

What hurts credit score most?

Missed payments (-100 pts), maxed cards (high utilization), collections/charge-offs, bankruptcy, foreclosure, too many hard inquiries (>6/year). Payment history = 35% of score, so never miss payments!
